Field Notes Productions is a non-profit multi-media company specializing in environmental and conservation reporting. FNP was organized to address the disparity between the information the public wants and needs, and the information it is actually receiving. FNP will do that by producing adventurous, engaging, sound-rich, in-depth features focusing on environmental and biodiversity issues around the globe, as well as environmental business stories from around the United States.

Radio though is, by nature, an ephemeral enterprise. Once a story is produced and broadcast, it is gone. But not our stories. Field Notes is in negotiations with several leading educational institutions. Our goal is to take the stories produced, and turn them into educational training materials. These materials can then be used in classrooms, by zoos and aquariums, and even by individuals who simply want to learn more about a particular issue.

By producing stories for a varied number of radio programs, and in a number of media formats, Field Notes Productions will reach the widest possible audience. So FNP will begin to address the disparity between the public’s desire to be better informed on such issues, and the lack of such information currently available in the broadcast medium.

But even then, we’re not done. We see what we’re trying to accomplish as nothing less than creating a major shift in how environmental journalism is practiced. So that means for such practices to continue and be long-lasting, we must also educate other journalists. So Field Notes will also work with the Society of Environmental Journalists (SEJ) to establish a journalism training program. This program will reach around the world to bring a new vision of journalism to reporters and editors.
